May 1, 2010 Camp Todd Bird Walk results

It was a beautiful day to be out birding. The lake bridge at the far end of the lake was a hotbed of activity. That's where we saw or heard most of our warblers. Muskrat, turtles and a variety of frogs were also identified. More butterflies were out as well. Participants were Debby Bennett, Les Cobel, Mike Todd, Gary French, Jane Clendaniel and Wes & Jane Pipes. Sadly, no youth showed up for the walk.

House sparrow vs. bluebird help

A persistent pair of house sparrows has been attempting to nest in a bluebird house despite my (and the bluebird's) best efforts at keeping them away. Does anyone have advice? I tried stringing fishing line parallel to the opening of the box but that didn't keep them out. The sparrows even nested elsewhere in some sculptural tree roots we were saving (see photo), but they seem to insist on claiming the bluebird housing. What's worked for you?

Here is a photo of a Drake Tufted Duck seen at Kent Narrows in Queen Annes County Maryland

Update on Blackwater Eagle Cam

During a visit to Blackwater NWR this morning the volunteer at the Visitor Center reported that their nest cam eagle laid her first egg on Wednesday, January 20th. She was on-nest while we were there, and she did not say anything about intentions for her second egg, but often it comes within a couple of days of the first, so this may be the day for that one.
