Thursday, January 21 - Movie.  "Saving Songbirds".  Join outdoor adventurer Willem Lange as he meets those colorful and melodic migratory birds like the black-throated blue warbler, and the researchers who employ creative means to assess the health of bird populations.

Thursday, February 18 – Program.   “Wild Bees and the Environment” presented by Sam Droege, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.  His current research activities include work on developing native bee survey techniques and monitoring programs.

Thursday, March 17 – Program.  Update on Tuckahoe & Martinak State Parks along with Scales and Tales presented by Park Manager John Ohler.

Thursday, April 21 –  Program.   “Status of the Red Knot” presented by Michael Hudson, Founder of Friends of the Red Knot.  The Red Knot was recently added as a threatened subspecies under the Endangered Species Act and was voted the 2015 “Shorebird of the Year” before this year’s World Shorebirds Day in September.

Caroline County Bird Club mourns the passing of long time member Ethel Engle


Ethel Quidas Engle of Preston, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at her home. She was 92 years old.

She was born on July 2, 1923, on Wings Landing Farm in Preston, the daughter of the late Frederick Quidas and Fannie Worm Quidas. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-nine years, Wilber Engle on March 5, 2013.

Ethel graduated from Preston High School with the class of 1940. During World War II she was employed by E.I. DuPont. She worked with her husband as a grain and poultry farmer. She also served as a caregiver in private homes and the hospital.

She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Preston where she had served as president of the Ladies Aid and the Sunday School Superintendent. Ethel also enjoyed being part of the Preston Community Club, the Rainbow Garden Club, Caroline County Bird Club, and Upper Shore Genealogy Society.

Ethel is survived by her three children, Irene E. Wheatley and her husband, Richard of Federalsburg, Richard Wilber Engle and his wife, Peggy of Preston, Timothy Lewis Engle and his wife Christine of Federalsburg, three grandchildren, Joanna Durando and her husband Anthony of Federalsburg, Scott Engle and his wife Lindsey, of Virginia Beach, Anna Engle of College Park, two great-granddaughters, and Kalei and Zoe Durando of Federalsburg, two sisters-in-law, Katherine Engle and Milly Quidas, and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by two children, Alan Lee Engle and Eileen Ellen Engle, five siblings, Marie Watts, Otto Robert Quidas, Josephine Engle, Irene Stanley, Bertie Plutschak, and Alan Quidas.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Framptom Funeral Home in Federalsburg with Reverend Thomas Becker officiating. Interment will follow at Junior Order Cemetery in Preston. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Saturday, October 10, 2015 .  Caroline.  Big Sit.  Location: Adkins Arboretum’s Wetlands Overlook. Will run from dawn to dusk. 

Thursday, October 15 –  Program.  “Forest birds and their habitats: 30 years of change on the Delmarva".  Ron Gutberlet, presenter.

Saturday, October 17 -   Bird Walk at Tuckahoe State Park. Leader:  Danny Poet.  Meet at Queen Anne’s side parking lot near boat ramp at 8 am. 

Caroline County Bird Club and Adkins Arboretum holding a Big Sit Saturday, Oct 10, 2015


Caroline County Bird Club is participating in the 2015 Big Sit Saturday, Oct 10 from dawn to dusk at the Adkins Arboretum's Wetland Overlook, which is located near the entrance of the Visitor Center.

Everyone is invited to attend! Dress for the weather and bring binoculars and spotting scopes if you have them.  Bring food and something to drink as well.

Adkins Arboretum is our partner this year. For every bird we get, the Caroline County Bird Club will donate $1 to Adkins Arboretum. Come join us for the fun!
